Chameleon's Lament: Metamorphasis in the Margins

Chameleon’s Lament: Metamorphosis in the Margins is a solo exhibition of large-scale oil and mixed media paintings by Kansas City artist Daniel Montoute examining invisibility as a survival strategy within contemporary civic systems, with overarching themes of homelessness and housing insecurity. Using the chameleon as an allegorical figure, the work centers people who must camouflage or code switch to survive. Layered textures, reclaimed materials, scraped surfaces, and shifting color fields create images that partially reveal and conceal themselves under changing light and perspective, mirroring the effort it takes to see people our systems routinely overlook. The First Friday public activation will feature artist remarks, a civic dialogue with leadership from reStart Inc., and live acoustic musical selections by Tirzah DeMeire. In partnership with reStart Inc., a percentage of all artwork sales will directly support housing continuum efforts and emergency support services for individuals experiencing homelessness in Kansas City.
